Soccer Insights July, Vol. 1

The 2016 International Champions Cup kicked off this past Saturday, July 23rd. This 7 country tournament will officially end one of the most exciting summer’s of soccer. The host countries consist of Australia, China, Sweden, Scotland, Ireland, England and the United States. With seventeen total teams playing at sixteen different venues across the world, it is the perfect time for you to see some of your favorite international stars hit the pitch in a city near you.

Talking Points:

  • Pep Guardiola, Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho will all be present as we get to witness how their new teams have adapted to their coaching styles early on.
  • Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso told ESPN FC that he is excited to help continue to develop the sport in the United States. “That’s what you want. To bring football, soccer, closer to the American fans because it will be great news if it’s bigger and bigger in the States. And it’s always good to be in great cities, Chicago, Charlotte and New York. For me it’s a very nice tour we will do,” Alonso stated.
  • The continued expanse of the tournament in many different countries shows the growing appeal and demand for elite soccer across the globe.
