12 Feb Twitter’s 2017 A-List Sports Handles and Tweets
With 2017 officially over we wanted to look back at the top sports teams and athletes in the Twittersphere this past year.
Below are the top 5 most tweeted sports team handles:
1. Manchester United 2. Real Madrid
3. Arsenal FC 4. Chelsea FC
5. Cleveland Cavaliers
These sports team handles made the list of top five most frequently used in tweets, replies and retweets throughout the year. An interesting takeaway is that four out of the five are soccer teams.
A majority of sports teams have been turning to social media as one of their main platforms to make major team announcements, such as player additions or trades and even live game updates.
In addition to teams, individual athletes were highly engaged on Twitter. The following athletes are increasingly turning to social media platforms to increase their popularity and create a brand around themselves. Through creating these brands around themselves, some of these athletes develop larger social following than the team they play on, such as Cristiano Ronaldo and his team Real Madrid.
Following are the top 5 most active athletes on Twitter this past year:
1. Cristiano Ronaldo 2. LeBron James
3. Neymar Jr. 4. Colin Kaepernick
5. Conor McGregor
With the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ right around the corner, Twitter will remain a go-to social media site to keep up with soccer teams and individual players. Twitter’s presence will also be uniquely strong for 2018 due to their partnership with Twenty First Century Fox Inc’s Fox Sports, which will stream a live show throughout the World Cup in Russia.
