U.S. Men Soccer Aim To Win Gold Cup, Following U.S. Women’s World Cup Gold

On Sunday, the U.S. Women National Soccer Team won the #FIFAWWC (FIFA Women’s World Cup), and the final match became the most-watched soccer game in the history of the U.S. We can say that USA leads the way in women’s soccer, after becoming the team with the most Women World Cup titles (3).

The U.S. Women team also won in social media, being part of the top three most tweeted about matches (USA-JPN, USA-GER, and USA-AUS), the most mentioned team throughout the tournament, and having the top 6 most mentioned players on Twitter (@CarliLloyd, @alexmorgan13, @hopesolo, @AbbyWambach, @mPinoe and @_JulieJohnston_). On Facebook, the top 5 social moments revolved around the U.S. team as well. Great performance on the field and on social media indeed.

Following the great performance of the U.S. Women team in Canada, the U.S. Men National Soccer Team began their journey in hopes of retaining their current Gold Cup winner title. The #GoldCup2015, which started on Tuesday, is being played in Texas, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Arizona, Kansas, Canada, North Carolina, Maryland, New York, Georgia and Philadelphia.

The U.S. Men debuted on Tuesday with a 2-1 win over Honduras, which was not very impressive, but it was a winning start. On Thursday, Mexico started their Gold Cup 2015 participation with a dominant win over Cuba, with a hat-trick form Oribe Peralta. The scoreboard finished 6-0.

On social media, the Mexican players are stronger than the Americans. According to the Gold Cup’s Connect page (as of 7/10/15), USA only has two players on the “social leaderboard”, while Mexico wins by goleada, with 7 out of the 10 players on the social leader board. The remaining player is Keylor Navas (form Costa Rica). Chicharito (MEX) leads the social interactions with 28% of the mentions and 202 mentions per hour. Clint Dempsey follows with 11% of the mentions.

This is the first Gold Cup that the USA plays without former team captain, Landon Donovan. In the last edition of the Gold Cup, Donovan was the team’s top scorer and the tournaments best player. Can Team USA win two major soccer tournaments back-to-back?
